Functions

Greenwood County Recycling is responsible for operating a voluntary curb-side residential recycling collection program that currently serves approximately 19,000 homes per week. The county provides one recycling container to each resident that is located within the cities of Greenwood, Ninety Six, Ware Shoals and other designated areas in the county. The division also operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where recycled waste streams are separated by type and prepared for sale to the recycling industry.

Responsibilities

  • Accepts recyclable materials from citizens and businesses within Greenwood County

  • Provides containers and recycling information to residents within the collection areas

  • Provides collection of recyclables for public schools and local government offices

  • Provides educational services to the community through tours and presentations to school and civic groups

  • Promotes recycling through participation in Community Events 

  • Provides recycling containers at each of the County’s nine Convenience Centers

This Office Does Not:

  • Pay anyone for recyclables delivered to the Convenience Centers or Recycling Center

  • Provide containers for households located outside the collection areas.

  • Accept any recyclables that are not included in the approved list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find out if I’m on a recycling route?

Most likely you will see “blue roll carts” in your neighborhood being set-out every other week for curbside pickup. If not, contact Recycling at 942-8567 and someone will be glad to assist you. If no one is available, please leave your name and number and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

What if my pickup day falls on a Holiday?

A notice will be provided instructing the day of pickup. You may also check the Greenwood County website calendar for holidays and makeup days.

What is my pickup day?

Homeowner's will receive an information packet when roll cart is delivered. You can find your pickup day and view a calendar for the year on the County website by searching your tax parcel and then clicking on the Community Info link.  Contact Recycling at 864-942-8567 for pickup day information.

How do I prepare my recyclables prior to placement in “blue roll cart”?

Rinse all containers, flatten cardboard boxes. Labels DO NOT need to be removed.

What items are unacceptable for my “blue roll cart”?

No Medical Waste, Styrofoam (egg cartons, packing materials), Plastic film (bags, wrap), Glass, Plastic grocery bags (return to store), Paint Cans, Sharps “needles”.

What can I place in my “blue roll cart”?

Paper (newspaper, cardboard, magazines, chipboard, phone books, catalogs, books, junk mail, office, computer, colored), Paperboard Cans, Plastic (#1 thru #7), Aluminum, (cans), Steel (cans), Juice Boxes, Milk Cartons and Broth soup boxes.

How many “roll carts” can a homeowner receive?

County Ordinance permits only (1) blue roll cart.

How to obtain a recycling container or “blue roll cart”?

Contact Recycling (942-8567). A work order will be taken over the phone. If no one is available, please leave your name, address, and phone number.
